Victor John Penner

Victor John Penner is a commercial photographer and the founder of TEST/model. Living in Vancouver, B.C, Victor started his career in the graphic design industry. While making his transition to photography, Victor had the opportunity to create the JONES Soda brand and incorporate his own black and white images into the label. After working as an Artist in Residence, instructing high school students in a week long fashion photography course, Victor was inspired by their motivation and creativity to start TEST/Model with the help of his wife and producer Marlisse. Supported by the local creative community, TEST/model has lived by the philosophy of “practice / express / nurture”.

The Equipment

For a recent TEST/model magazine editorial shoot featuring the awesome “re-cycled” outfits of up and coming designer Eason Wang I knew that I wanted to use contrasty light and “embrace” the shadows. Flashpoint suggested going with their Broncolor outfit and the results were exactly what I was after!

Flashpoint supplied a Broncolor Scoro A4s 3200 W/s pack, Pulso G 3200 W/s heads, P65 Reflector and the beautiful Broncolor Para 170 Reflector with the 3200 W/s Ringflash P.

I am one of the least technical shooters that you will ever meet and the Broncolor system is super easy to use. Even for me! If you do want to “play” you can adjust duration, colour temp and power (in 1/10’s of a stop!)

Using the Broncolor Para 170 Reflector as a wide (underpowered in this case) fill allowed us the option to open up the shadows if we chose to (we didn’t) and I can’t wait to use it as a “main” for some B&W full length fashion/portraits on white!!
